Pas vanaf het wijdverbreid beschikbaar worden van gedrukte muziek en het (gelijktijdig) ontstaan van de nationale conservatoria worden creatieve, reproductieve en theoretische vaardigheden geleidelijk aan structureel gescheiden. Uitvoerders, toehoorders, componisten en theoretici worden aparte categorieën. Het nagenoeg verdwijnen van muzikale creativiteit, een zwak ontwikkeld gehoor, een onbetrouwbaar geheugen, een verstoorde beleving en zelfs onwaarachtigheid vormen sindsdien de typische pathologie van generaties hooggeschoolde uitvoerende musici. Na jaren ‘teaching research’ met kinderen en volwassenen concluderen de auteurs dat de gangbare muziekagogiek niet compatibel is met de manier waarop het menselijk brein muziek verwerkt. In dit boek zetten zij ‘leren musiceren’ onvermijdelijk in een evolutionair perspectief. Muziek komt niet van de goden, maar zit net als taal van bij de geboorte in het brein gebakken. Het boek wil musici en pedagogen opnieuw op het spoor van de klank zetten. Het toont aan dat een creatief-auditieve omgang met de muzikale bouwstenen onmisbaar is in de groei naar muzikale expertise, artistieke integriteit en zelfredzaamheid.
