It is for this reason that the International Course in Anthropology of Health and Health Care has been developed. This course has been designed for research officers of public health institutes, coordinators of community health care programmes, project staff, responsible for the implementation of various health programmes, public health professionals, social science lecturers at universities, and junior social scientists, who intend to specialize in Anthropology of Health and Health Care.
The course takes a multi-disciplinary approach and focuses on a number of important problem areas and issues, such as vaccination, reproductive health and AIDS, equity and community health financing, self-care and the use and distribution of pharmaceuticals.
The manual in its earlier editions has been used since years for teaching in the field of applied medical anthropology and public health in academic institutions worldwide.

Wanneer allochtone ouderen verzorgingsbehoeftig worden, verwachten ze deze zorg van hun eigen kinderen. Voor de kinderen blijft het vaak schipperen tussen de eisen die hun eigen leven stelt en de verwachtingen van hun ouders. De eerste generatie kon door het verblijf in Nederland zelf ook niet voor hun ouders zorgen, zoals het traditioneel gebruikelijk is. Zij hebben hun opvattingen over traditionele zorg daardoor ook enigszins al aangepast.
Bij de tweede/tussengeneratie allochtonen is onder invloed van Nederlandse waarden en normen - en hun betere kennis van de in Nederland goed ontwikkelde professionele zorg - sprake van een herdefinitie van de zorg aan hun ouders. Binnen de allochtone gemeenschap in Nederland is er nu een verscheidenheid aan zorgrelaties te constateren, variërend van traditionele zorg door de familie tot het volledig wegvallen deze informele zorg.
Vooral wanneer kinderen niet bereid zijn de verzorging voor hun ouders op zich te nemen, vallen er gaten die zorginstellingen niet lijken te kunnen opvullen. De thuiszorg, verzorgingstehuizen en andere Nederlandse voorzieningen kunnen allochtone ouderen vooralsnog vrijwel uitsluitend zorg bieden vanuit een Nederlands kader. Er lijkt weinig inzicht te bestaan in de manier waarop binnen de allochtone gemeenschap voor ouderen wordt gezorgd. Hierdoor is het moeilijk om in te spelen op hun zorgbehoeften. Deze studie vult deze lacune.

For most consumers, advertising is less important than advertisers might think. Advertising appears to function as ''wallpaper'', something in the background that is hardly noticed. The advertiser, however, wants the consumer to use his advertisement as a piece of information, for example, when standing in front of a shelf thinking what kind of detergent is ''best'' or ''cheapest''. Mass mediated advertising campaigns should therefore at least function as a reminder when making all kinds of choices concerning brands, products or services.
This book describes consumers'' use of advertising. The question to be answered is: "How and why do people use advertising?". Are they searching for information or simply watching commercials because they are funny? Are they avoiding ads because they find them irritating? And to what extent is (claimed) advertising use related to remembering having seen specific ads? The five studies in this book use different methods and research designs for addressing these questions, to understand and explain advertising use. These include: a meta-analysis of more than 50 studies on advertising, several in-depth interviews, a nation-wide telephone survey with follow-up by mail, an experiment, and a face-to-face survey.
