Prosopography and computer. Contributions of mediaevalists and modernists on the use of computer in historical research

 12,90
This book is a collection of papers by the first generation of historians and mediaevalists in particular to use the computer intensively in their research and combining this with historical prosopography. Themes of the most diverse nature are being treated: there are classic prosopographical studies on particular social groups or occupational categories, such as students, parish priests, protestant clergymen, nobility, innkeepers, notaries public or nuns. But other less well defined populations have been dealt with too: illegitimate children, urban elites and even whole urban populations. Even a study on humanist books has used prosopographical methods. All these contributions give a richly diverse survey of prosopographical research carried out in Flanders and in the Netherlands. They allow to assess how computer and automated treatment of data have been put to practice often in a very pragmatic way. They show the consequences of automatisation for practical archival research as well as for the eventual treatment of historical data. And last but nog least they offer examples for other researchers of the often very practical experience in computer-aided historical research.

Koen GOUDRIAAN is verbonden aan de VU Brussel, Kees MANDEMAKERS aan de VU Amsterdam, Jogchum REITSMA aan de Fryske Akademy Leeuwarden, Peter STABEL aan de Universiteit Gent. Reeks Studies in Urban social, economic and political History of the medieval and modern Low Countries, nr 2
